CONTROL Resonant Aberrant Weapon: Remedy's Shapeshifting Melee Arm Explained
The Aberrant is CONTROL Resonant's shapeshifting living melee weapon. See what Remedy has confirmed about its forms its combat role and its lore.
What is the Aberrant in CONTROL Resonant?
The Aberrant is the signature weapon of CONTROL Resonant — a living, shapeshifting melee weapon that Dylan Faden carries into a warped Manhattan. Remedy’s own promotional copy leans on the name: something “unstable, unusual”, exactly the kind of object the Federal Bureau of Control would lock in a Panopticon cell rather than hand to an agent.
It replaces the gun entirely. 2019’s Control built its combat around the Service Weapon and telekinetic gunplay; Resonant hands you a transforming close-range arm instead, which is why coverage of the game keeps comparing it to Devil May Cry rather than to Remedy’s own shooter.
What can the Aberrant do?
Remedy has confirmed the shape of the system without enumerating it. Official material describes the weapon as shapeshifting — it becomes different melee forms during combat — and pairs it with paranatural abilities as the two halves of Dylan’s kit. Official screenshots show at least a two-handed heavy configuration in use against groups of enemies.
What is not public yet:
- The full list of forms and their names
- How forms are unlocked or swapped mid-fight
- Any weapon upgrade or modding layer
Each of those gets its own section here as Remedy reveals details — this page tracks the Aberrant from announcement through launch.
Launch update (October 2026): the roster is public now. The Aberrant picks run three layers — primary forms (Strike, Glaive, Cleave), secondary forms (Crush, Drill, Extend) and combo finishers — with full comparisons, unlock costs and recommended builds in best weapons.
Why did Remedy move from guns to melee?
The honest answer is design intent, not lore. Game Informer’s hands-on preview framed Resonant as Remedy’s take on stylish melee action — a deliberate pivot for a sequel that could have safely repeated the first game’s formula. The lore wrapper is thinner but on-brand: in a universe where objects have powers and names mean something, a living weapon that reshapes itself is the most FBC thing imaginable.
For series veterans the practical implication is bigger than the weapon swap: spacing, dodge timing and combo rhythm matter far more than in Control’s cover-friendly firefights. Our combat guide breaks down how the pieces are expected to fit together.
How does the Aberrant relate to Dylan and the Aberrations?
The naming collision is deliberate and worth untangling: the Aberrant is Dylan’s weapon, while Aberrations are the paranatural enemies he uses it against. Official copy puts both in the same sentence — stop the Aberrations with the Aberrant and your abilities. Whether the weapon shares a deeper origin with the creatures it kills is exactly the kind of question Remedy’s marketing is letting people ask without answering.
