CONTROL Resonant Abilities: Every Power and Where It Comes From
Every CONTROL Resonant ability in the released game: the prologue choice, the fault traversal powers, and what each Resonant boss grants — all tracked by source.
What abilities does CONTROL Resonant have?
CONTROL Resonant gives Dylan Faden paranatural abilities that run alongside the shapeshifting Aberrant weapon — official material consistently describes the two as a pair: weapon for close range, abilities for everything the blade cannot reach. In the released game, every ability has a traceable source:
| Ability | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Barrage / Volatile Anomaly / Shield | The prologue’s three-way combat ability choice — Polygon recommends Volatile Anomaly (builds Falter, keeps Dominance) | Beating The Artist (fight guide) |
| Shift | Movement power, unlocked in the West Incursion Zone’s fault | Jesse Sightings: The Incursion Fault |
| Reach | Grapple — the Metro/evacuation traversal workhorse | Jesse Sightings: The Subway Fault |
| Push / Ground Slam | The Dancer’s branching choice — knockback and ledge kills versus a height-scaled AoE slam | Beating The Dancer (which to pick) |
| Heat Wave / Heat Aura | Fire abilities that melt through Mold armor plating | IGN final preview — Mold’s weakness per the enemy guide |
| Sixth ability slot | The kit’s final expansion | Epic’s abilities guide covers how to earn it |
One naming caveat worth knowing before you argue about these online: different preview outlets used different names for overlapping powers — other coverage referred to fire and knockback abilities as Ignite and Push. The Push label survived to release; treat preview-only names as historical footnotes.
What progression system do abilities use?
Three confirmed pieces point at the progression shape:
- Technique Points — the pre order bonus includes one Technique Point, which is ability/skill currency by any reasonable reading of the name. You will spend these, not grind them.
- Talents — preview coverage refers to talents and builds alongside abilities, suggesting a split between active powers and passive customization. IGN’s preview adds that the game keeps you out of build menus — combat flexibility with minimal menu time.
- Adjustable difficulty and no timed inputs — both listed on the Steam page, which matters because ability-heavy action games live or die on whether the game respects your reaction speed.
Traversal abilities are tied to the game’s dungeons: Reach is learned inside the Metro Vault, and preview coverage positions these dungeon visits as the story’s progression beats — the deeper structure is covered in the combat guide.
How do abilities interact with the Aberrant?
Think of them as one kit, not two systems. Melee chains have abilities woven in — the classic stylish-action rhythm of weapon strings broken up by powers — rather than a spells-from-a-distance loadout stapled onto a melee game. The design rule holds across the kit: abilities feed the Aberrant’s execution-Dominance loop, not replace it — the best talents page builds around exactly that spine.
Ability picks are one-per-run decisions that a Reset Item can undo (one category each). The Aberrant weapon page tracks the other half of the kit, and the boss roster lists which fight grants which power.
